main problem ive heard from customers on the SV27 shaft breaking is the stub being so long that it rides up into the stuffing tube, if its rubbing anywhere in that tube the heat will play killer on the shaft and cause it to either come un-soldered OR break close to the stub, if your having issues top side check the stuffing tube-motor-shaft alignment, also should be approx 3/16 gap between the drive dog and strut itself..
Res3567 has a good handle on running the SV (and has run both long and short versions of my shaft) maybe he will chime in and give you some advice
