I think rust/chipping has been way overdone. A little dusting or mud or with some streaking from the rain is all that's needed ... maybe.
Agreed, these things cost big $ for Germany at the time and we are talking about the anal Prussian military mind, they took care of the Panzers best they could, lots of photos and films of repainting in the field.
