You want to ensure that the air exit area is larger than the inlet, so that you do not ''pack'' air in the cavity. Exit larger than inlet will cuase a negative pressure at the inlet and ''suck'' air into the engine cavity.

To expand on this, the exit area should be at least twice the size of the inlet.
