RE: Neptune ARF advice on 1st seaplane? Construction tips?
The build is still going very well so far. I had to repaint the cowl using primer, then regular white enamel and then clear gloss. I wet sanded each coat to bring that nice shine out, then I applied rubbing compound and then wax and buffed the dickens out of it.
That was the only real problem that I saw in this whole ARF, and it could be with just my plane. The cowl was shipped in a sort of plastic rap and I think the paint was still a little damp when they wraped the cowl for shipping. That resulted in a rough pitted finish, it's like the plastic kind of ate through the finish?
Once I cut the cowl into 2 parts and I was done painting- I noticed a stress crack forming on the back cowl on the front side edge when I sized the cowls on the mount. I hit the crack with thin CA front and back, then used white glue to fill the crack in, then I primed and painted over it. (White glue flexes and keeps the crack from forming on fiberglass and plastic.)
So in the pictures you will see the back cowl missing for now because I'm still wet sanding, filling and polishing.
All the electronics are in and everything is ready once the back cowl is finished. I'm still debating if I want to add any stickers to it, it looks fantastic with or without them. I might add the O.S. and Tru-Turn stickers, but we'll see. I still have to do the ballance check and control throws. So far this plane went together 50x's better than the Maxford version of the new V2. To me Maxford went backwards with the new Neptune V2 in my opinion, they should have kept the contract going with Mr. Lee at League Models. I'm very pleased on the way my plane came out. I can hardly wait to do some pond jumping!
