Default RE: SAITO FA-82 (Issue) - Need help

G'day

Saitos come out of the box with the low speed needle set very rich and the setting that is recommended for running in is also very rich. This is necessary for the first tank or so to make sure the engine gets well lubricated but it may need you to leave the glow driver connected for the initial runs if it wants to stop.

If you do a search you will find Dave Hobb's method for running Saito motors in. It goes something like this.

1. First couple of runs - set the throttle about half way open then adjust the high speed needle so the engine runs at about 4000RPM. This should be for a total of about 10 minutes.

2. Next 10 minutes, lean the needle to get about 6000 RPM. At this point, I think he adjusts the LSN leaner to get a reasonable idle.

He then runs it for a further 20 minutes gradually leaning the top end but at this point, I usually put the engine in a trainer and fly it rich.

He may chime in here and tell you properly his method. His tuning method is good too. To set the LSN, you have first to have the engine set with its HSN set to peak lean (but not too lean). Then adjust the bottom and and then repeat the top. Repeat the cycle till you have a good idle and transition and then richen the top a little.

Glow plugs do not always survive the running in. Some get contaminated with fine metal particles and need to be replaced.

Hope this helps a bit.
