The 2nd gear on the MGT is actuated by a sprag that come out and grabs the 2nd gear. 1st gear has a one way bearing.
I would start by checking the slipper clutch. Also, i assume the gearing is factory ( 16/52 ) because if someone has installed something like a 13t bell, its going to be much slower. Just some things to check.
