He wrote that removing the pipe from the underside drastically alters the drag profile when the plane is yawed, and goes on to state that yawing is present to some degree in all rolling and point manuevers (that seems obvious). He says this is why different angles are required on different planes, and he had flown planes that were "absolutely weird" because the angle was not correct. He doesn't go into detail as to why though.
