Default A project or two

A while back I was looking for motors with a shorter length than stock Hank Long or Tamiya Mabuchi
types. The reason for it is shown below in a photo. I have been fiddling with a Heng Long KV-1 with
Asiatam lower hull. I wanted power. I bought a set of steel gear boxes from Phil and initially fit a stock
set of MPI / Maxx Product reductions. They didn't fit in the narrow space afforded by the hull; not only were
the combined length of motor and reduction unit too long they actually overlapped space. This wouldn't do at all.
Hence the search for short can motors. Not finding them easily I decided to take another approach. I modified
the reduction units to make them .125"+ narrower by reducing the gear hubs and pinning them to newly made
shafts. I also shortened the three support spaces by an appropriate amount. I replaced the units' mounting
screws with modified ones screwed into the mounting holes from within ( heads thinned ) so that I could
use nuts to mount the entire unit on the gearbox frame. All of the brass bearings have been soldered to the
gear box frames.

I'm using a RX18 with David's battle system and a Futaba 7 channel receiver. The model weighs a just around 12
pounds using zinc Mato track.

The model is incapable of going fast and will push my heaviest chair around the kitchen. Turns are great and it exudes
power. Just what I wanted! I'm making a few more mods to the upper hull then paint and an appropriate Russian slogan!

Other project to follow.
