Default Tail Dragger Conversion, Skylark 70

I have a Goldberg Skylark 70 (GP sells them now) that I am going to convert over to a tail dragger. The main reason is that the steerable nose-wheel, as many do, is giving me problems that I am pretty much sick of dealing with and the tail dragger steering seems to be the most reasonable way to deal with it.

I've converted a couple over from trike to tail dragger, however, it's been a while and I am looking for the best way to get it done.

First of all, the compartment where the fuel tank goes has lots of room. The bottom is balsa sheeting. The walls are Balsa over thin ply, and there is a 1/4" x 1/4" brace that goes along the length of the model on the inside on the left and the right side at the bottom of the fuselage. I screen captured a picture from the manual that points these features out. The picture does not show the former to the rear of the compartment. It does show the trike steerable nose-wheel mount that I want to get rid of.

There is a former to the rear of the compartment that I intend to use as a brace to epoxy the hardwood mount to.

What I want to do is place the hardware mounting hardwood against this former, and brace it in somehow to the ply sides of the plane. I would have to cut out the bottom sheeting to match the hardwood main gear mount.

This is mainly my idea as to how to do this. Any suggestions from you guys that have done this before would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

CGr.

Edit:

What hardwood would you use for the main gear mount? Birch? Maple? Oak? What?
