Default Engine mounting position ?

What are the advantages and disadvantages other than the obvious mounting engine inverted, or 90 degrees on its side.
I was told by several club members that have been flying
for many years to avoid mounting the engine inverted.
Hard to start, flooding problems, glow plug not in convienent
location, etc., etc, etc.

I have a new plane that I currently have a .40 engine mounted
upright but am installing a tt46 and would like to mount it
on its side so I can install the cowling that came with the plane
but if I do this I will have to have either a extension to the muffler
or buy and install a pitts muffler. Any suggestions?

We have lots of planes at our club that have the engine mounted
on its side and they all seem to perform very well with no
more problems than the upright mounted engines.

Also if I decide to install a mousse can muffler and mac header
combination is there any special extension needed for
clearence to the fuse with engine mounted on its side?
