Default most user friendly covering?

Another vote for Ultracote.

If you decide to use Ultracote be sure you know the temp of your iron. Either buy the thermometer that you place on the iron or borrow one then mark your iron for 225 degrees and 300 degrees. The 225 is for tacking and the 300 is for shrinking. Remember, if you put the sock on after that the temp will be somewhat cooler, so mark accordingly.

Also, I'd misplace that heat gun until you really get familiar with the covering. If you heat the seams by mistake, the covering will shrink and pull away (not repairable without a patch or new piece).

Read the directions that come with each roll and follow them! (well, if you buy two rolls you only have to read them once! LOL). After you tack the seams down at 225 and move up to shrink at 300, don't go near the seams again unless you go very fast.

Practice on some scrap first. Do some edges. Some round, compound curves so you'll get the feel of the material characteristics.

Good luck!
