I know of two kits out of the hundreds at our club that were built as boxed - and both of them were for a magazine review on the kit. Experimenting is what this hobby is all about. Mostly because we get our best ideas at night after the hobby stores are closed, or at the field when we discovered we broke or forgot something.

About everything in this hobby is the way it is because somebody started fooling around with something in his basement. You should have seen some of the clockwork mechanical timers and de-thermalizers we used to make for free-flight models. Will changing a port on a carbureator increase RPM? If it is designed as a tricycle gear what will I need to change to make it a tail dragger? Can a hamster brain and a crystal be used to to make a receiver - oops, that one's not ready yet.
