RE: 1st Annual Bakersfield D7 Spring Pattern Bash
Hey guys just a couple more things. We are going to fly a little bit of old style pattern but not by the classic pattern rules. We are going to use the 1983 rule book. Thats right its pick your own pattern from a list of manuevers and the total K counting take off and landing cannot exceed 45. However it can be less. This is open to everyone that would like to try it. I have already been contacted by some names from the past that are actually getting new planes just for this.
Of course Tony has his trusty Phoenix, Jim K with either a Compensator or Sillouette, Matt K (still thinks hes going to crash again if he flys again) Richard Verano (thats right MR YS) a new Phoenix or XLT he is picking up from Joe Bridi himself, (He has not committed 100% but he sounds pretty excited and I know the factory was able to find a couple engines so I think the odds are pretty good) and I just bought a Tipo 725 kit to go with my trusty Rossi thats been in my glove compartment since o8. I know there are a couple more guys with really good planes in perfect condition from back then lurking about and I am trying to get in touch with them. If anyone has Pete Callas's number please pm me.
We have 4 guys so far which will definitely make it a contest and a neat bit of nostalgia for eveyone to enjoy. This class starts off the contest and will fly on both lines, once per person in order to get 2 rounds done right off the bat. I only flew Masters in 83, and then turnaround came out in 84 and changed everything. I do remember watching a couple guys fly these patterns many times and I knew that thats how I wanted to fly. Dave Wilson and Jim Kimbro in my opinoun were the best pilots of that era. I clearly remember watching Dave Brown, Mark Radcliff, Helms, Bonetti, all great pilots but none of them had the style of the west coast boys.
Jim always had super clean imaculate airplanes and flew a very distinct and pronuced style that was almost unbeatable when he was on. Dave on the other hand was the one guy that flew so smooth and precise using rudder in places back then it was never thought of. After they kicked my but by so much at the end of 82 I knew I wanted to fly just like they did and that is how I still fly today. (Janet, Jims wife, had not seen me fly since 1982 and it was so funny at Whittier in 2009 when she look at Jim during my flight and said "Thats how you use to fly just do it that way again" She has a good eye and memory)
Dave taught me more then Jim because Dave would talk to me. Jim would just tell Dave to get rid of me. lol Both of them were team alternates Jim more then once and both times missing the team because of stupid stuff not his flying. One time, the timer called time, when he was about 5 feet off the ground zeroing his landing and the other time an elevator servo quit, but he was able to land the plane, change it and continue. Dave is still a great (UAV) pilot, golfer, bowler pretty much whatever he tries and I bet if Andrew hauls him down from Utah with him and we find the crookedest, heavy, oil soaked, Deception around Dave wiil beat us all. (Andrew balls in your court)
Anyhow Jim has the rule book and we are going to get Mike Greer the list of manuvers so we can score it with the computer tear sheets. There will be no Normalizing as that didn't start until the next cycle.
We have had a bunch of positive response on the shortened patterns and the guys are all making improvements. I was down in Chula Vista earlier in the week and spoke with several of the guys and it sounds like we have at least a few coming that have not traveled before and possibly a lot more. See, they have about 20 guys that fly Emac and half of them have full blown pattern planes. We have it set up for me to run back down to give a pattern seminar and fly in the Emac contest in order to get the guys to try some pattern. Steve Dente is the mastermind behind a lot of this and he seems to think if we work together a little we could see a signifigant amount of guys give pattern a try. I think this is awesome and if this works out I think some other events should try the shortened patternsas well. We will have flight times tomorrow, but for now Leon said the intermediate pattern, cut off at manuever 14, is still about 7 minutes takeoff to landing which I think is about right.
The field is being resurface next Thursday and we are going to install some more lighting and some speakers in order to have a little something to listen to during the half time shows and in the evenings. Kyle Dahl is definately in for the demos and the contest just not sure which pattern is suitable for his skill level. . I will get the Hotel info out tomorrow or Mon. and we have added Thunderpower, and Smart-fly to the sponsors list for prizes.
And finally Judging. We have a couple guys coming I think will be a welcome site to help out and nobody should have to judge more then one round unless they want to.
Thats All for tonight
I am beat
