Iniially the corsairs had both sides of the blades painted but the pilots complained about falling asleep or getting airsick after staring at the prop during flight. That resulted in in the paint being removed from the rear of the blades.
Interesting fact!
Pappy Boyington mentions in his book that he made a kind of auto-pilot device using strings and rubber bands to attach the stick to the cockpit so he could doze during long cruises.
I can't tell if his sleepiness was from the prop or he was dozing off his hangover
