For mufflers a quick and nice clean up is to put a soft wire wheel on your bench grinder. It doesn't scratch them but cleans them up beautifully. You'll find the soft wheels right next to the hard ones in the hardware store. After using the soft wire wheel they are ready for polishing if you so desire to do that.
