Well probably if you want to use the MDS you might put it in a test stand and break it in there. While I have never operated one I have seen a number show up in the past and none were very successful with them.
At least that way it would be less work than going ahead and installing in the airplane. I suspect the reason it ended up even new in box as a raffle was simply no one wanted it.
