what are good airframe matches for these piped gas engines?
tony
Anything set up for glow power that has a full pipe belly. Or you may need to add a pipe floor to something less.
I suspect that anything set-up for electric will also be okay but will need some additional reinforcement around the engine compartment. That is as simple as adding some carbon cloth area to distribute the load better. The electric set-ups will also need a pipe floor added. I used 1/32" balsa glass laminate in past models. All else is the same
In my current design on the bench the pipe floor is blue foam/glass laminate.
If you are not sure, consider the EF Extra for gas'glow. It isn't a pattern plane but is a good teacher. It is very big and needs all the power it can get. The 33GT and the PTFE36 are good matches. And it is around 400$ plus shipping...cheap!
I had a soft mounted, piped DLE55 in mine turning a 20X12 Mezjlik 3 blade carbon prop. That was an amazing combo. Alas, a bad SpektruM RX ruined that one....BUT 12 1/2 lbs all up with around 36 lbs of thrust...sweeet! Gave new meaning to the term "throw around"
