Where are you located, and is there a club nearby?

Internet advice is great, but no substitute for in-person help.

A club may even have designated instructors, who may be able to put your plane on a buddy box- allowing the instructor to instantly take control if you get the plane into trouble.

I'd also recommend joining the AMA. Membership provides liability insurance, and is generally required to fly at a club field.
