Welcome paul....I just started in this hobby a year and a half ago....as most of the guys are saying, rc tanks are kinda a cult of the rc world. Not many people know about them but those that do seem to really get into them. Hl tanks areentry level. There are a bunch of options out there for them. If you are into the other rc stuff, you might want to look into some of the electronic packages that will allow you to use hobbygraderadios and maybe better sound options.....any questions, post them up.
