RE: Bootlegger redux...
It flew!!!
I went over to Triple Creek R/C Club near Brandon, FL last Saturday for the maiden flight(s). My wife came along to support and photo document the experience and Sam Leonard met me there to assist. Doug Phillips, of TCRCC, was our host and helped me with inital runup.
Initial runup yielded 14,200 rpm on the ground with an 11x7 Zinger (basically a smoothed out tree branch!) with the mixture set to just hit the pipe. The model took two points of up trim and 3 of right aileron trim. I had set three throw rates and flew on the 'middle' one, still a touch 'sporty' for high rates but were fine for the conditions. It didn't take many passes before I did a long slow roll... man that's cool!
I flew four flights and only had issues with the pipe mount. I'll need to repair where the stinger exits the can (braze let go) and make a 'sliding' pipe mount to account for length expansion with heat. I'm fabbing pieces today... Also will reduce mechanical throws and go from there with TX rates and expos (things I never had in 1979!).
I've attached a few pics; Doug helping with assembly and runup, Sam Leonard and me, runup for 1st flight, slow roll!, after landing and the re-created 1979 pose. I have a really short video that I'll try and put up later.
Regards,
Cliff
