As others have said, a glow plug is a DC device so polarity does not matter. On my two engines you have to "tease" the glow plug element out of the base of the plug to obtain reliable ingition of the "gas". Based on your question I would strongly suggssest you obtain a manual on a commerialy made engine to quickly enducate yourself on the current state of engine design and operation.
