While it is certainly true that running methanol will generally allow one to run a higher compression, running methanol with no other changes will still result in a power increase. This is because while methanol has a lower BTU than gasoline, you have to run twice as much of it in an engine, which results in a net horsepower gain. There is also a gain because the methanol tends to cool the incoming mixture, hence making the mix more dense and affording a power increase for that reason as well.
