I've only built a classic flash but the only use I can see from the manual for the thin flimsy ply is during the construction of the blocks that attach to the gear legs and hold the gear covers in place (in conjunction with the 10mm balsa block). It is mentioned in the manual under the heading 'Main Gear Doors'.
I'm not sure how many people bother to fit these; I certainly didn't.
