RE: Lightning Build
Robert,
I use two basic types of carbonfiber in my build. I use 5.6 oz/ sq yd bi-directional cloth to do most my laminating. I use this laminated to both sides of 1/8" lightply to make my gear plate, and laminated to one side of 1/8" lightply to make the former that ties into the stab tube. On my next airplane I am probably going to use 1/8" regular ply, laminated on both sides, for my gear plate. I havn't had issues on the current airplane with the lightply gear plate, but the one on installed on the prototype had the plys of the wood split apart. For the corbon reinforced fuselage longerons, I used 1/8" lightply, laminated on one side with unidirectional 0.005 carbon on a web binding. I also use the unidirectional carbon, cut into 1/4" strips to reinforce my foam wings.
I have never used net binding, but it does not seem to be as uniform as the web binding. I suspect either would work just fine for the applications we are discussing here.
