RE: Help me find my dads plane
Jeff, you might rent the movie "Flght of the Phoenix" with James Stewart if you have never seen it. There are, if memory serves me correct, some great air to air shots of a Packet in the first few minutes of the movie. Then too, being a modeler, you'll like it!
Having only seen the under sides of Packets, I can't say which model the pic shows. When we were chasing Chinese and North Koreans during the Korean War, we often out ran our supply lines, or got into places jeeps and trucks couldn't go, so the Packets flew it in for us. Coming down amid the craggy hills to pinpoint the drops didn't allow enough altitude for some chutes to deploy, so you can figure what happened and why we ate busted crackers for days afterwards! One time the Chinese blew out a bridge ahead of us that caused a slight delay, but the Packets came over from Japan and dropped us a whole new bridge!
The Packet, whichever version rendered should make a fine model. The original was just a big empty box slung under a high lift wing with two engines to haul it all around. If you make one, let us see some progress shots now and then. Good luck,
