Default Installing and wicking hinges

I have the Great Planes C182 ARF for my second plane. The Avistar ARF is my first one. I have two questions perhaps some of you can answer...

1. I've been trying to fit the hinges in the slots that are pre cut. I'm sliding them in as shown, with the length going in the slot so the hinges go in deeper. If there is too much of a gap between the trailing edge of the wing/vstab/hstab and the control surface, how deep can you cut the slot? I'm afraid of going thru the frame into the open area between the ribs of the structures.

2. On my Avistar they just had you wick thin CA without drilling holes, but this kit says you should drill a hole in the middle of each slot to help the CA wick through. The material of the hinges seem identical. Is the drilling really necessary?

Thanks in advance!!
