Yeh, I'm not the biggest Traxxas fan, but I'll give credit where its due, they have the hands down best mini, I love my wife's Merv. Great car after you've spent another 150 or so on aftermarket goodies...and therein lies the problem. Anyhoo...

Onebadtwo, nostalgia isn't what it used to be, as they say. I reckon you should pick up a modern 4wd with a killer brushless setup, just to see how the hobby has evolved compared to the bad old days. You can always buy something retro later.
