It's great to see a Phoenix 1 build thread. It was the very first plane I ever built, (I was ambitious and thought it was soooo cool). It was pretty rough, but that's how I spent my summer in 1965. The wing was built FLAT if I remember correctly--it didn't have any dihedral as such...I remember building it on one of the library tables at my Jr High school, (the librarian flew R/C).
I couldn't fly at the time, but who cares about details like that. I built the plane and painted it like an F-86 Sabre I saw in a book. I never flew it. Over the years of storage the 1/16" balsa sheeting got brittle and cracked. When I eventually moved out of state I gave it away to someone who I'm told flew it. The next sentence was that "It flew faster than hell, and made a spectacular crash..."
The pictures on the right are of Don Lowe's original Phoenix 1 taken at the 1965 Detroit Invitational. I showed him a picture of mine, and he just smiled as if to say, "...kid you're over your head"
