Stabilizer Mod
Following the Kit directions, the Horizontal Stabilizer is attached with epoxy to the top surface of the cradle. This seems to be an attachment point that could easily fail. Particularly since the Vertical Fin attaches to the top of the Horizontal Stabilizer thereby adding more stress to that thin bottom joint.
To Beef up the mounting, I removed 1.5 inches of covering between the ribs in the center of the Stabilizer and fabricated 2 plywood pieces to laminate to the sides of the Ribs and extend down onto the side of the Cradle inner surface. After I Epoxied the Stabilizer to the fuseglage (the Ribs line up perfectly wtih the Inside of the cradle after adding 1/8" Rib doublers) I epoxied the pieces in place. The Ribs and the Cradle are both plywood as well and the laminated pieces locked the Stab very securely in place.
The Photo shows the new pieces before they were inserted in place. The original design may be ok but I feel better about the strength/integrity of the tail feathers with this simple mod. The hole toward the front is for the Nav Light wiring to pass through.
