Izzy almost all of my airplanes even those without cowls I do that way. It provides a very easy place to fuel from and nothing can get to the carb to cause any flooding in the case of the glow engines with no need for the problamatical fueling valves. Also for the glow engines it provides a place to easily and safely pinch the fuel line for high speed needle adjustment something I am a strong proponent of for two stroke glow engines. One additional advantage is it provides an easy place when a cowl is used to clip hemostats when used for inverted installations.
In the case of the gas engine of course it is just a convenient and quick way to fuel without third line and the required plugs that so often get lost in the sand or refueling valves which I abhor. In this case since I did use a fuel filter it is easy to use this in place of the short piece of fuel tube that is normally used at the joint.
