Another interesting comparison would be a 737, 757, DC8, Airbus. The trend is that in aerodynamics, the shape tends to converge onto that which works. As far as doing it with classic pattern planes, I suspect that that group would all have profiles similar to each other, and slimmer than modern pattern designs, which are flown slower.
