Some people have had good luck running 5 cells on the older ignitions and some have not, A 5 cell pack will charge to around 7.5 volts and the ignition's were not made to handle that much voltage.

A good way to check your ignition is to short the two outside leads going to the sensor, Every time you short them and then release the ignition should fire.
