RE: What plane did you fly then vs now?
Okay, I'll give it a try..
I'm new to RC Universe, but not particularly new to models...
Lemme see.
1. Ace All Star Bipe (learnt me to snap roll) (1972)
2. Ace Pacer (1/2a pattern plane)
3. Ace Mach None (ditto)
4. Midwest Foam Super Chipmunk w Enya .19 (would do ANYthing inside)
5. Midwest Foam Super Chipmunk #2 (painted with Taipan .15) HOT plane...still no outside manoevers.
(okay, these aren't technically pattern planes, but they led me to pattern)
(1975-1978...College. In retrospect, I shoulda saved my money)
6. (1977) Direct rip-off of Hanno Prettner Curare, replete with retracts, and Prettner style airbrakes. Scratch built.
7. Gator Flea. .40 sized version of Rhett Miller's ...um...was it Compensator? (someone help here)
8. Hobby Barn 'Minare' (.4o sized Curare)
9. Minare #II
geeze, I'm just up to 1983...what have i done since then?
10. Another scratch built 'Curare', still .40 sized.
11. Used 'Hippo Typo'...loved this plane
12. Used (but nice) .20 sized Dirty Birdy with K&B 3.5 and pipe. I HATED to admit I owned this a/c, but it was my trophy monger. 7 firsts, 2 seconds and 3 thirds, against full sized (.60) models. I put it into a SC swamp, and all I recovered was one elevator. It's a prized posession now.
13. EU-1A. Great plane, but the army conspired to never let me get to a contest with it.
14. Hobby Barn Curare (1986) Awesome plane...couldn't ever quite figure out the German system (I was stationed there) so never flew it in competition.
15. Hobby Barn Curare #II. Built it just to take home to the states after my Germany deployment. Removable stab, very deluxe. Shipped it via the Army. Never Saw it again. I suspect some eskimo is using the wing as a kayak, and the BRAND NEW OS .61 RE and pipe as a sinker...*sigh*
16. Original design....all inline (thrustline, wing, stab) flew well enough, with a tendency to tuck at high speed.
17. Original design, wide-body (seems that's all the rage now). Picked up another trophy or 3, during a mall demo, radio quit, went straight down from about 300 feet to concrete. Had a weiner roast over the remains (including radio and engine).
18. T2A-mk II. Traded a Frackowiac kit of his Challenge V for this. shoulda kept the Challenge...sweet a/c. T2 wasn't bad...but wasn't great. I flew it through 1992, and got a couple of trophies, but I SURE missed that Challlenge.
19. Own design 'Procyon'. Beautful flyer, somewhat underpowered with the engine I used. Lost in a home fire.
20. Presently have plans for all versions of the Typhoon. I plan to build one with a wide-body fuse, and no other changes. Probably aimed at a YS 1.10.
I might have missed a couple, but these were the ones that influenced me most. I'm currently building an original design, a Kwik-Fly III and a Typhoon 909.
regards,
Dave
