Howdy - Last year, I got my then 10-yr old son an ECX Boost RTR kit and he still loves it. It was $150.00 + tax and has been a real value. The car and radio gear are decent and it has been tough enough. If I were going to do it over again, I would likely spring for an extra $50.00 and go with the Helion Criterion Buggy (2wd) or the Helion Dominus SC (4wd).
