My vote: go USMC in the Pacific. They used a lot of M4A2 (Tarawa or Iwo Jima have plenty of subjects with photos, I believe) because it used a diesel engine and getting diesel was easier than getting MOGAS. Oh, and many of them used logs, planks or tracks to add to the hull armor. So, you could scratch that itch, too!
