B-17 was used for
Pr and war bond tours, most notably the Memphis Belle. But the B-17 is not really credited to a single designer. The P-38 however, is mainly attributed to Kelly Johnson, was one of the first planes to use stainless steel, and did have it's armor, weaponry, and fuel tanks upgraded , so I'm going with the P-38.
