Yet another update. bought the charger and charged the aparent damaged battery. it still works good, so the problem must have been me soldering the charging leads to the wrong terminals.
Since I have a Craftsman charger now, I will not mess around trying to use my other charger anymore.
The only problems is that I now have two batteries, so I need to find a use for the second battery (portable shop vac here we come!!) :-)
