Use it in rate mode. Also you want to disable the gyro by using the gain so that when you are in flight its not trying to move your nose gear. Even if you disable nose steering in the transmitter if your gyro gain is left on it will still try and move the nose gear and burn the servo out. So make sure you put a mix on the gear switch to take gyro gain to 0.
