I am finding that is a hard principle to relay. Fortunately, he loves building and flying model airplanes and has the goal to be a pilot. My goal is to give him the room to be a kid and have fun.... but have those larger goals driving his decisions now.
He needs to know important it is to get into a profession that requires a certificate, a license and any other credentials that can make you more valuable to your employer. The career fields that traditionally included pensions and great benefits are getting phased out, so every cup full of knowledge and skill you acquire as a youth turns into a truck load of reward later on in life.
My most successful friends and acquaintances were the ones who were smart enough to realize this early in life.
