Seems to be a tough one, not a lot of photos. I read he had three P-38s, and one article said he had 4. Seems to be some pictures of Scat IV being a Mustang, so not too sure about that. Only flew Lightnings for a few months before switching to Mustangs
It seems the first Scat was likely OD with strips and red rudders, but lots of artist renderings show that as Scat II. Actual picture of Scat II shows bare metal, but just shows the nose. Seems to be a lot of artist renderings, and decals. The artists must have gotten guidance from somewhere. Must be a few pictures out there, just a little hard to find.
Of coarse, if you end up not finding any proof either way, pick the one you like, and no one can prove you wrong
Can also search for pictures of planes in same squadron. Might help with tail markings and strips. Little Friends is a pretty good site
