Not sure about guidlines but the LHS sells it in one or two different widths specifically for wing joints. Speaking of guidlines I like the direction for the Ultrasport that says to draw a line out half the distance of the width of the cloth from the centre line to keep it straight and centered. I have made some pretty wavy non centered joints before finding this out.
