I've seen NiMh packs melt the shrink wrap off them they got so hot(and this was on a brushed vehicle)
Also with NiMh you have a chance to damage the ESC.

I've never seen a NiMh pack explode... BUT I have had a NiMh AAA battery explode on my desk before. Scared the crap outta me, and blew the flashlight it was in to pieces. After seeing that sucker explode(it was only a few hundred mah) a 5000mah battery exploding kinda frightens me
