With a high pixel count camera the crop feature in software editing can be very helpful. You can take your picture with a good focal length, and then just crop it to look like a close up. You won't get too much pixelating unless you really zoom in and crop. In your example you could have taken that shot from 5 feet back and then just cropped it. Your depth of field would have been better and the guys in the foreground would be more in focus with the tanks in the back.
Just a trick that digital a camera has over the old style film camera, As the pixel count goes up the better result this trick will produce.
