My honest opinion is that if the symbol bugs you then the plane should too. That's just me. I would go with historically accurate.

I was stationed in Germany and bought a bunch of kits at one time (plastic models) and when I opened them all the Germany unit markings and such had been cut out of the decal sheets. I know a lot of that stuff is illegal to display over there but I thought it was OK in historical context. So when I build them I'm going to have to buy a bunch of after-market decals.
