RE: 5lb 3D plane to electric
I have looked into this and it is just way cost prohibative. To get a Hacker c50 acro, controller, LiPo packs you will run $1000. For a grand you can have a lot of Gas motors. I don't think it will be too long before it will become more budgetable but right now it is quite extreme.
If you can stay in the 3-4 pound range the 40 class hacker can still have a BEC and it can cut some cost out but it is still more than a 50cc gas.
I had looked at the House of Balsa electric Edge and thought about bashing it for 3D but it is just too much of a project right now with a 35% on the table. But it looks like it might be a good size and weight to work from. You can find the info in the current MAN but it isn't on their website yet. ~40 oz. ~45" span
I also thought about using FanFold foam to do a built up wing, using a CF spar, then using Balsa to frame the FanFold For the tail surfaces, light ply and foam for the fuse. I am still thinking it through though but I would like to get about 50-60" span and 3D surfaces. I wish one of the "real" "Pros" would take this on as a kit or ARF. There is a lot of demand out there if someone could do it. I'm not a builder, except when I have to be.... I'd rather fly!
