CANT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY STOPPED PRODUCTION.
I can answer that one for you. The kit wasn't up to GP's standards and they didn't want to put for the expense of replacing all of the dies, canopy mold AND redrawing the plans and instructions. This is the information I received directly from GP when I asked this very same question.

Considering how popular the kit remains, it appears that GP made a blunder.
