Why don't you assign the gyro on and off switch as your "Dual rate switch". That is when gyro is on the expo will be lowered while rates stay the same... And when gyro is off you will have higher expo and same rate.
Keep in mind that each flight mode needs to have the same assignment of switch in the dual,rate screen as ech rate is Specific for each flight mode.
