Generally, (especially with your first kit) build up the kit first and get everything working.
I leave off some smaller details, such as some hand tools to paint first then add later.
You may also want to leave off smaller moving parts such as hatches or travel locks so you can paint both sides and they don't get in the way.
Then partially disassemble to paint items separately for the primer and base colors.
Then remove and paint separately: Turret (sometimes main gun too), upper hull, lower hull, sprocket, idler, and road wheels without tires
Then add those elements back if doing camo pattern.
