I don't think you can blame it on the Internet entirely. The same divisiveness, bitterness, rudeness and lack of respect has become the norm in American politics, usually spearheaded by the guy who won on the platform of "bringing us all together". People just seem to have less interest in listening to other sides, less interest in compromise, more interest in finding differences and less interest in finding common values.
