I've used the Stits/PolyTone process on 5 or 6 planes. Straightforward and very forgiving but somewhat time consuming due to the number of paint layers (poly brush, poly spray, color, clear). I always use a respirator but I know people who don't bother. The stuff is not deadly like some automotive paints but still contains some very nasty solvents. I use a disposable 3M respirator (
3M 53P71PC1-B Paint Spray and Pesticide Respirator). About $25 and lasts for a year or 2.
Just
keep it sealed in a ziplock bag between uses. Use MEK for thinning and for paint gun clean up.
The finish will last 25 years but be aware that any solvent will take the finish off the plane as it is not a 2-part cured finish.
